Collection Processing Instructions
Fasting and post dose (ammonium chloride) - collected hourly for 2-6 hours post dose.  Random urine specimens.  Should be 30-80 mL per each specimen.   HAND CARRY specimens to Lab-Specimen Processing immediately after collection.  Oral test dose of ammonium chloride must be obtained by the nursing unit from Hospital Pharmacy.  Note: The requesting physician will need to order the ammonium chloride test dose (0.1 g/kg in 100-200 mL of flavored water) from the Hospital Pharmacy.
 
A two hour blood sample is also drawn. 
A serum bicarbonate (test code=CO2) or venous blood gas sample for pH and PCO2 should be collected 2 hours after administration of the test dose.​

Marshfield​ pH of post dose specimens should be < or = 5.5.  If 2 and 3 hour urine pHs are <5.2 test may be discontinued​
