Lidocaine is mainly utilized in the clinical setting as an anti-arrhythmic drug. It is used to normalize irregular heartbeat and prevent cardiac malfunction and arrest. Examples include: acute treatment of ventricular arrhythmia’s following MI, or during cardiac manipulations (i.e. heart surgery). Lidocaine can also be used as a local anesthetic.

Sampling time for adequacy early in therapy: 5 - 10 hours after start of therapy, or 30-120 minutes post loading dose. If toxicity suspected, obtain specimen as close to episode (diminished mental status, QRS widening) as possible.
Time to steady state: 5 - 10 hours.
