Orthostatic Proteinuria
Test Components
Urine Protein and Creatinine
Useful For
Presence in the urine is a sensitive indication of renal disease resulting from either glomerular or tubular dysfunction.
Specimen Requirements
Fasting Required Specimen Type Preferred Container/Tube Acceptable Container/Tube Specimen Volume Specimen Minimum Volume
(allows for 1 repeat)
Pediatric Minimum Volume
(no repeat)

Collection Processing Instructions
10 mL aliquot from each of two timed urine collections-one collected while patient is at rest (resting) in a supine position (typically 7-9 hour collection), and the second collected during ambulatory hours (upright) while the patient is upright (typically 15-17 hours), both collections occurring over the course of a 24-hour period. Label each specimen appropriately (upright or resting).
Collect specimens without preservative.

See Orthostatic Proteinuria for test procedure and protocol.

Test Information

Report consists of the collection volumes in mL and protein excretions in mg for the resting and upright specimens.

Reference Range Information
Performing Location Reference Range
Marshfield The following criteria are necessary for diagnosis of orthostatic proteinuria:
-Resting excretion is minimal ( < 50-100 mg) for an approximate 8 hr resting collection interval.
-Upright excretion is significantly higher than resting (80-100% of total protein).
-Total urinary protein (Upright + Resting) is typically < 1500 mg/24 hr.
