Useful For
HPV Genotyping should only be ordered on samples that have tested positive for high risk HPV(HR-HPV). The currently recommended indication for HPV genotyping is in cases when a woman has had a normal cervical cytology result in conjunction with a HR-HPV positive result.  If HPV genotyping reveals the presence of HPV 16 or 18/45 the patient should be referred to colposcopy.  If HPV genotyping does not reveal HPV 16 or 18/45 the patient should have cytology and HR-HPV testing performed again in 12 months.

Collection Processing Instructions

Cervical specimens obtained using a spatula/cytobrush collection device and placed in ThinPrep vial containing PreservCyt solution. Transport ThinPrep specimen at room temperature overnight.

Samples submitted in green label Aptima tubes containing 1.0 mL of PreservCyt solution will be accepted if the sample previously tested positive for High Risk HPV.

HPV Genotyping should only be ordered on samples that have tested positive for high risk HPV. If Marshfield Labs performed the HPV nucleic acid testing within the last 20 days, please call the Molecular Pathology lab section at 715-221-6191 to have the HPV sample retrieved for this testing request. Marshfield Labs Molecular Pathology section is staffed Monday – Friday (0400-1700).
