26616 Enteric Viral Panel by Nucleic Acid Test

Enteric Viral Panel by Nucleic Acid Test
Test Code: EVPNAT
Synonyms/Keywords

Norovirus, Rotavirus, Adenovirus, Sapovirus, Astrovirus, Feces, Nucleic Acid Test, Enteric Pathogen

Test Components

DNA isolation, multiplex real-time polymerase chain reaction amplification and detection.

Useful For

Detection of Norovirus GI and GII, Rotavirus A, Adenovirus F40/41, Sapovirus (Genogroups I, II, IV, V), Human Astrovirus (hAstro) in patients with gastroenteritis.

Note: Acute diarrhea occurring after 3 days of hospitalization is unlikely to be due to bacterial enteropathogens. Consider a Clostridium difficile toxin nucleic acid assay for C. difficle-associated nosocomial diarrhea instead of stool nucleic acid test. (see Clostridium difficile Toxin Nucleic Acid).

Feces outside of stability ranges
Specimens collected from inpatients after 3 days of hospitalization without laboratory approval
Duplicate specimens within 24 hours
If test is ordered in conjunction with the Enteric Parasite Panel and the Enteric Bacterial Pathogen Panel, all tests will be canceled and the Extended Gastrointestinal Panel will be ordered instead.

Interference

Any inhibition of amplification will be detected through the use of an internal amplification control.

Negative for Norovirus, Rotavirus, Adenovirus, Sapovirus, and Astrovirus

Interpretation

Negative results in individuals with gastroenteritis may be due to infection by pathogens that are not detected by this test or are non-infectious cases. Positive results do not rule out coinfection with other organisms that may also cause gastroenteritis.
